Ancient Purity presents one of the most powerful immune-building plants on the planet. Astragalus is a class of daptogenic herbs found in northern Asia that’s been used to combat weakness and health issues for thousands of years. Some of the plant constituents have shown to be so potent that they’re now being used as the basis for different drugs. Astragalus is a plant within the Leguminosae (beans or legumes) family, with a very long history as an immune system booster and fighter against poor health. It is also used for blood sugar regulation, support heart health, and strengthen the body.

Astragalus Roots are harvested from four-year-old plants and the roots are the only part of the plant that’s used medicinally. Only two of the over 2,000 species of Astragalus, Astragalus membranaceus and Astragalus mongholicus, are used medicinally.  Astragalus contains three components that allow the plant to have such a positive impact on human health; saponins, flavonoids and polysaccharides, which are all active compounds contained in certain plants, including some fruits and vegetables. Saponins are known for their ability to lower cholesterol, improve the immune system. Flavanoids, also found in Astragalus, provide health benefits through cell signalling. They show antioxidative qualities, control and scavenge of free radicals. Polysaccharides are known to have antimicrobial, antiviral and anti-inflammatory capabilities, among other health supporting benefits. As the Powder (as presented here) it is easy to add to Tea, Elixirs, Tonics and Herbal Smoothies.

Astragalus is the Longevity Herb

Astragalus is uniquely healthy for your cellular wellbeing because of its ability to protect your body’s telomeres from degradation. Telomeres are small pieces of DNA located at the edge of your chromosomes.  When your cells replicate telomeres help prevent your DNA from unravelling and keep it locked into place. They serve a similar function as the plastic caps on the edges of your shoelace. Whenever your cells replicate telomeres shorten a fraction. After so many replications the stubby telomeres reach a critical point where they’re no longer usable and cells begin their programmed death, a process called “apoptosis.” Astragalus causes your body to increase its production of a substance called “telomerase” which is an enzyme that enables the production of more telomeres. In clinical studies, mice treated with extracts of Astragalus root had telomeres that were longer and degraded more slowly than a control group.

What’s more impressive is that despite these remarkable effects on cellular health there’s apparently no toxicity from Astragalus if taken at reasonable dosages. Astragalus contains some polysaccharides which are just unique. The most notable compounds are called formononetin, calycosin and astragaloside IV, and have been shown to do the following things in your body; They reduce the amount of nitric oxide released from cells, which reduces inflammation, they cause certain genes and metabolic pathways to be shut down which would otherwise cause blood and chemicals to flow to wounds, they activate other genes and pathways which activates different immune cells. The patients were treated with a purified extract of Astragalus membranaceous in two one -month cycles. After the first month 82% of patients reported feeling better and more energetic, and the following month 71% of the remaining group reported better feelings of energy, vitality, and youth. The study was a double-blind placebo-controlled study and fairly high quality.

Astragalus and Blood Sugar Balance

astragalus root

Astragalus seems to be a decent food for those with a body that does not properly process food for use as energy. For a reason that’s not entirely clear patients who take Astragalus exhibit better blood sugar control.

The different polysaccharides protect against radical scavengers, and the benefits Astragalus provides to cellular health seem to carry over in its ability to metabolise different nutrients.

Studies show its ability to relieve insulin resistance and therefore it might be possible to help people with food-processing issues naturally. The herb’s collection of saponins, flavonoids and polysaccharides might all be effective in supporting people with chronic health issues that affect the way their bodies regulate blood sugar, or glucose. They’re able to increase insulin sensitivity, protect pancreatic beta cells (the cells in the pancreas that produce and release insulin) and also act as anti-inflammatories in areas related to chronically high blood sugar levels.

Radix Astragali (the root of Astragalus membranaceus Huangqi) is a common traditional Chinese medicine that has a long history as a Chinese herbal. It is used in the treatment of diseases of the heart, liver, and kidney. In western herbal medicine, Astragalus Root can also be used in immune system disorders, viral infections, and even certain severe ailments.

Astragalus Gives

Helps to Combat Stress... Worries and chronic stress can cause adverse effects to our health. Hence, they need to be kept in check.  Astragalus helps in curbing the stress level promoting peace and calmness in our mind and body. Those who suffer from mood swings and constant nervous tension may benefit from this ancient herb.

Supports Restful Sleep...Sleeping disorders, sleeplessness, interrupted sleep patterns might disappear by regular consumption of Astragalus root. By improving overall health, metabolism and hormonal balance this root can help in delivering peaceful sleep.

Kidney Support... Your kidneys are part of your immune system. They filter excess water and waste from the blood to be expelled in urine. Your kidneys also keep your body’s minerals and salts in balance and produce hormones that make red blood cells. Health issues such as chronically high blood sugar levels and high blood pressure can damage the kidneys. Performing a natural kidney cleanse is a great way to support normal kidney health. Some research shows that Astragalus root extract may help increase the iron-rich protein, hemoglobin, in red blood cells and lower increased levels of protein in the urine. More research is needed, but studies do suggest that Astragalus root provides nutrients that support normal kidney function.

Astragalus Keeps Giving

Cellular Health... The cells in your body are constantly growing and dividing. Sometimes the regulation of cells is disturbed, and the cell’s normal growth and behaviour stop. Studies performed using Astragalus Root have revealed an increase in the cells lining the walls of your arteries, known as endothelial cells. Researchers continue to study how Astragalus root may support healthy cell cycles for overall wellness

Seasonal Support... Most of us are prone to some allergy or the other which interferes with the normal functioning of our lives. Astragalus root extract has shown tremendous relief from the symptoms of seasonal allergies such as itchy eyes and skin, sneezing, nasal congestion, wheezing, and rash. While Astralagus is not a cure for shortness of breath or allergies but including this plant in the overall medical care is known to be of help.

Supports Liver Health... Like the kidneys, your liver is part of your immune system. It detoxifies the blood and contains cells that can digest cellular debris and old, worn-out blood cells. When the liver accumulates toxins or becomes damaged, it affects your immune system and makes it difficult for your body to perform its most basic detoxification functions. A liver cleanse is a good approach to supporting normal liver health. Astragalus root can be a helpful supplement during a cleansing because its natural, immune-boosting qualities may help detox and protect the liver.

Aids Vessel Health... Damaged arteries are often the result of high blood pressure. A build-up of plaque that contains fat, cholesterol, and calcium can severely affect cardiovascular health. Over time, plaque can cause calcification, which hardens the arteries and makes it difficult for blood to flow properly. The build-up of plaque also narrows the arteries and eventually causes the blockage that leads to serious health issues. The soothing qualities of Astragalus root help break down arterial plaque and encourage balanced cholesterol levels.

Astragalus Supplements, Dosages, and Side Effects

One of the benefits of Astragalus is that despite its potent behaviour within the body it seems to be benign at almost all doses. As far as our research shows there are no cases where Astragalus caused harmful side effects in patients. Because of its widespread health benefits and being natural, most people would benefit from having some Astragalus in their diet.

However, due to its unique properties Astragalus probably provides the most help to the following people: elderly people looking for a non-invasive way to fight the vagaries of old age, people looking to reduce weakness and chronic tiredness or reduce the collateral damage from the treatment of conditions with chemical substances, anyone with a brittle immune system that’s sensitive to over the counter medication, and people looking for a natural/ homoeopathic way to help control blood sugar.

Astragalus Root... Closing Thoughts

Astragalus is an herbal supplement that has been used for centuries in traditional Chinese medicine. It’s purported to enhance the immune system and reduce inflammation. It’s also used to support a healthy heart, kidneys and more. Astragalus may help enhance your immune system due to it fighting bacterial and viral infections, including common cold. Studies indicate that Astragalus supplements may help control blood sugar levels for those with a body that does not properly process food for use as energy.

However, more research is needed. Though research findings are mixed, Astragalus may help improve heart function in patients with heart failure and reduce symptoms of inflammation. Some studies suggest that Astragalus may help improve kidney function in those with kidney issues. It may also prevent infections in those with reduced kidney function. Astragalus Root Powder is generally well tolerated but should be avoided if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have an autoimmune condition or are taking immunosuppressant drugs.
