Olive Oil just Gives

When it comes to Olive Oil pressed from fresh olives, the Italians, Greeks and Spaniards have long had a corner on the market. In addition to enjoying the great taste of Olive Oil, Greeks understand that there’s more to the oil than meets the eye. It’s important to know that the flavour, smell and colour of Olive Oil can vary significantly based on whether it’s extra virgin (finest grade) or not. Extra virgin Olive Oil is the highest quality Olive Oil you can get. It is unrefined and contains more nutrients when compared to other processed varieties. In fact, in contrast to unrefined extra virgin Olive Oil, refined Olive Oils could be lacking in important fatty acids, rich oleic acid, and other nutrients.

A word of caution is warranted when it comes to Olive Oil… fake olive oil abounds. High-quality Olive Oil should smell fresh and fruity. It should have a slightly spicy taste, which can leave a harmless burning sensation in the back of your throat. Tests reveal that 60-90% of the Olive Oils sold in grocery stores and restaurants are adulterated with cheap vegetable oils or non-food-grade Olive Oils. When it comes to flavour, texture and quality, all extra virgin-Olive Oils are not created equal. It is Ancient Purity’s aim to help you take the guess and work out of finding a high-quality Olive Oil to enhance your culinary experience at home.

Certified Biodynamic® & Traditional Certified Organic Differences

Of course organic certification was a huge leap in the production of food, traceability and peace of mind but now things are going further as we become more passionate about the quality of our food. So let’s see how Certified Biodynamic® compares to NOP’s Certified Organic standards...

Most organic farmers recognise the importance of caring for their soil and may already be practicing some of the biodynamic methods – thereby exceeding the organic standards. Certified Organic is still a very high-quality standard out there. Certified Biodynamic® is quite simply a step up to an even higher standard.

If a farm is "Demeter certified" it means that it has also met the organic standard, even if it isn’t certified organic. Certified Demeter Biodynamic® is as good as it gets in agriculture – it’s the platinum standard for high-quality, nutrient-dense food.

Most Olive Oil is Not what You Think It Is...

According to The New York Times, many Olive Oil manufacturers who include the words "Extra Virgin" and "Italian" on their labels are not accurately describing the product. Some manufacturers have mixed high-quality oil with lower quality variants to save money. Sometimes the oil is not from Italy but the manufacturer has labelled it as such in hopes of fooling consumers who associate the European country with quality olive oil. In drastic cases, the oil isn't even olive oil at all but rather a vegetable oil that manufacturers have disguised with colouring and scent. Flashy labelled supermarket olive oil is not exempt from the shady practices that plague the industry. Unbelievably in Italy, experts estimate around 50% of the olive oil on supermarket shelves are fake! Whilst over in the USA estimates range from 70 - 80%. The main cause of this issue is that making olive oil correctly is very difficult.

“I thought about olive oil, about the sacred depravity. I thought about how oil meant power, and how Savino Vitelli was testament to that—he was untouchable, ancient, godlike, and olive oil had made him that way, much as it had made Odysseus something more than a mere mortal. It elevated. And I wondered, if I let it, if olive oil would do the same for me.”
- Abigail C. Edwards, And We All Bled Oil

Olive Oil manufacturers have to grind and press the olives as soon after harvesting as they can. They also have to be gentle; too much friction will raise the temperature of the Olive Oil and ruin the flavour. Overheating will also result in olives that are high in oleic acid, which makes for a lower-quality oil overall. So there is the difficulty of making high quality Olive Oil, then events like bacterial outbreaks, which can kill olive trees rapidly, causing dips in olive oil production by as much as 20% in Europe. Manufacturers still have bills to pay, which may prompt them to cut corners. It's all about trust and Ancient Purity has wisely chosen to supply Solspring Biodynamic Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil, because we trust it, we tested it and we loved it. So why not switch to or start using this Olive Oil and feel the difference.

How to Test Olive Oil Purity

If you’re unsure whether a certain brand of olive oil really is pure, there are a few ways of figuring it out. Unfortunately, lots of brands of olive oil are often tempered with. It's common to find olive oils that are diluted with lighter, cheaper oils. Luckily, there are ways of testing the purity of olive oil that are actually much simpler than you'd think.

Put a small amount of oil in a shot glass (or small cup; the exact container isn't important here). Then put one hand over the container and one hand underneath it and swirl the oil.

Your hands will warm the oil and keep the aroma trapped. Position your mouth like you were about to make the "ee" sound.

Next, bring the container to your lips and slurp it quickly. This allows the oil to coat your taste buds evenly.

With your mouth open, inhale as if you've just cracked your toe on a sharp corner. This will help the oil coat your entire mouth.

Take note of the taste. Quality, genuine Olive Oil will often have a taste that reminds you of freshly-cut grass. Fraudulent Olive Oil will remind you of mud or hay.

A Longevity Diet should be rich in healthy fats and Organic Extra virgin Olive Oil is right at the top of those healthy fats. The antioxidant Secoiridoids found in Olive Oil helps activate gene signatures which contribute to reduction of cellular stress. The Secoiridoids present in Olive Oil may actually suppress gene expression related to the Warburg effect and helps to prevent “age-related changes” in skin cells.

Ancient Purity suggests that Olive Oil should never be heated, in fact if it is it's likely it could have the opposite effect. Cooking with Olive Oil produces advanced glycation end products (AGEs), which contribute to “the multisystem functional decline that occurs with ageing.” If you want to cook with healthy Oils, consider Coconut Oil or Organic Ghee, both available from our store. Olive Oil should be used as a dressing, taken alone or added to a smoothie.

Highest Purity, Highest Quality

Biodynamic® Extra Virgin Olive Oil utilises only the finest olives from the Koroneiki tree, it is special in many ways...

  • Native to Greece from trees that have survived since ancient times.
  • Glowing golden-green colour oil.
  • Yields a very high content of oleic acid and polyphenols.
  • Exceptionally long shelf life.
  • Contains a cultivar (cultivated variety) suitable for an excellent premium Olive Oil.

The Koroneiki olive tree variety is considered one of the best in the world and has Hellenic origins. In Greece, it is also known as Koroni, Kritikia, Ladolia or Psylolia. The Koroneiki olive tree was originally cultivated in the semi-mountainous areas of the western Peloponnese but today we find Koroneiki olive trees also in Italy and in other countries of the world. It is a type that is particularly suitable for super high density olive orchard.

Biodynamic® Extra Virgin Olive Oil… Closing Thoughts

Mediterranean cultures have used Extra Virgin Olive Oil as the only source of cooking oil for centuries, with their diet showing the highest amount of scientifically proven health benefits. The main antioxidants of TOs and Extra Virgin Olive Oil are phenol alcohols and acids, secoiridoids, lignans and flavones, all of which possess the ability to prolong the oil’s shelf-life and exhibit healthy properties for humans. The precise detection of secoiridoid derivatives remains the breakthrough for the nutritional and health quality certification of extra virgin olive oils required for EFSA health claims.

“Once someone tries a real extra virgin -- an adult or a child, anybody with taste buds -- they'll never go back to the fake kind. It's distinctive, complex, the freshest thing you've ever eaten. It makes you realize how rotten the other stuff is, literally rotten. But there has to be a first time. Somehow we have to get those first drops of real extra virgin oil into their mouths, to break them free from the habituation to bad oil, and from the brainwashing of advertising. There has to be some good oil left in the world for people to taste.” - Tom Mueller, Extra Virginity: The Sublime and Scandalous World of Olive Oil
