Bamboo Facts

When thinking about reforestation, bamboo might not be the first tree that comes to mind. And it is correct, botanically speaking Bamboo isn’t a tree but cultivating and planting Bamboo is no less beneficial for the environment and humans. Indeed, as the planet’s fastest growing grass, Bamboo has great potential being a sustainable resource. Bamboo’s woody stem makes it very tree-like, yet this plant also has unique properties.

Bamboo a Super-Fast Grower… According to Guinness World Records, some species of bamboo can grow up to 2.91 FT a day, or 1.5 inches per hour! So if you sit and look long enough at it, Bamboo might just grow before your own eyes! Now how does it grow? As a colony plant (grass), Bamboo uses its energy expanding its roots and growing more shoots in springtime. These shoots emerge out of the ground to grow taller and wider for about two months. After two months, the canes stop growing altogether, and energy is directed back to the roots for the development of further canes. This is where Bamboo diverges from most other plants, which put their energy into continued growth of the original stem. After three years when Bamboo is established, the new shoots that emerge each spring will continue to get larger and larger. Pretty cool, isn’t it?

Holding Soil Together… Due to bamboo being a type of grass, its root system is very shallow with rhizomes solely populating the top six inches of the soil. The roots’ rest only spread around 14 inches deeper. But because the roots are so densely clumped, they do an amazing job at holding the soil’s top layer together, thus preventing erosion of the soil.

Bamboo Economy… Seriously! Bamboo’s light weight allows many local women to participate in the bamboo economy, providing them access to a relatively lucrative source of income. It also can help secure the female labourers a place in decision-making in political, public and economic life. Some examples of products they can make with this self-sustaining resource include: bamboo briquettes, charcoal, incense sticks, furniture, as well as Ancient Purity’s Bamboo Eco Cotton Buds. Isn’t that amazing?

Bamboo Gives

Here's some more...

Water Management… Lush Bamboo roots create a water barrier, and are used by coastal villages to protect their crops from getting washed out by rising water tables. And thanks to this barrier, Bamboo can effectively filter organic matter (including soil nitrogen), leading some scientists to explore it as a sustainable wastewater treatment option.

Regeneration Superpowers… Cutting Bamboo actually stimulates growth. How does this work? Well, rather than directing energy towards regaining its lost height, a cut Bamboo stalk will simply unfurl new leaves. These leaves, in turn, create and send energy down to the root system to encourage the growth of new shoots. The more that gets harvested, the faster it grows. That makes Bamboo an incredible renewable resource that can be harvested and will regrow naturally without the need for manual reforestation.

Flexible and Strong… Bamboo makes a perfect, environmental-friendly building material, particularly in earthquake-prone areas. In this regard, Bamboo has been prevalent since the beginning of humanity, and has been used in place of wood, bricks, steel, and more. In fact, in some nations, Bamboo stalks are used to build scaffolding. If we used Bamboo for more construction purposes, we would save numerous trees and important forests from deforestation.

Sustainable & Effective

Bamboo (Toothbrush)… Closing Thoughts

“Notice that the stiffest tree is most easily cracked, while the bamboo or willow survives by bending with the wind.” - Bruce Lee

“Destroy the man of wicked thoughts, Like a bamboo-tree with its fruit.” - Gautama Buddha

“Study the teachings of the pine tree, the bamboo, and the plum blossom. The pine is evergreen, firmly rooted, and venerable. The bamboo is strong, resilient, unbreakable. The plum blossom is hardy, fragrant, and elegant.” - Morihei Ueshiba

“Bamboo is flexible, bending with the wind but never breaking, capable of adapting to any circumstance. It suggests resilience, meaning that we have the ability to bounce back even from the most difficult times. . . . Your ability to thrive depends, in the end, on your attitude to your life circumstances. Take everything in stride with grace, putting forth energy when it is needed, yet always staying calm inwardly.”  - Ping Fu
