Folate / Methylated Folate 5-MTHF
Ancient Purity's L-Methylfolate is the right kind of Folate that can help your body clear away toxins and cell-damaging substances. We proudly provide Folic Acid as Methylfolate (5-MTHF) which is a stable and methylated form of Folate. It supports maternal tissue growth during pregnancy, psychological function, blood formation, homocysteine metabolism, immune system function and amino acid synthesis. Folate also contributes to reduction in tiredness and fatigue and has a role in the process of cell division. As mentioned in a healthy pregnancy, a low maternal folate status is a risk factor in the development of neural tube defects in the developing foetus. This supplement though is clearly not just for pregnant women, it is multi faceted. One of the functions of 5-MTHF is aiding normal homocysteine metabolism. If homocysteine is too high, the body is at risk from chronic diseases like heart health and cognitive decline. This supplement is used by men and women alike, comes in a Miron Glass Jar.
Ancient Purity presents Folate also known as Vitamin B9, essential in the body to make DNA, RNA and metabolise amino acids necessary for cell division. Folate helps your body sweep away Glyphosate and Heavy Metals and provides your cells with a B Vitamin they can’t live without. Living in today’s world assures a hefty exposure to heavy metals and harmful chemicals. From the food you eat to the air you breathe to your home furnishings, you take in a wide array of toxins daily. Discover how a little-known form of Folate may be your ticket for boosting your body’s ability to eliminate toxins and help repair DNA for healthy cells and tissues. Folate is vital in the methylation cycle – the purpose of this cycle, which occurs in all cells of the body, is to create S-adenosylmethionine (SAM), the universal methyl donor. SAM is used in many metabolic processes that require a methyl group.
By supplementing with L-Methylfolate, you ease the unwanted stress on your liver to help it do one of its most important jobs which is help your body cleanse itself and remove cell-harming toxins. Animal and human studies on our L-Methylfolate show it has an enhanced oral bioavailability compared to folic acid and other forms of reduced folate. Plus, it passes the gastric barrier and is absorbed mainly in the small intestine, ensuring a higher Folate uptake. This type of folate can also help boost methylation, or your liver’s ability to add methyl groups to the DNA molecules in your cells to help your body function properly. It also supports detox from Glyphosate and Heavy Metals.

First the Bad News... Glyphosate
Glyphosate is the active ingredient in the world’s most widely used pesticide... Nearly one billion pounds of glyphosate are sprayed on food crops each year in the U.S., five billion in total worldwide. While genetically engineered (GE) crops are far more contaminated with glyphosate than other crops, this pervasive herbicide is currently used on over 120 non-genetically modified crops, such as conventional avocadoes, grapes, wheat, and oats. And based on a recent analysis of over 1,200 urine samples, 76% of people have glyphosate in their system. Most people have no idea they have it in their bodies. Glyphosate is the most widely used pesticide and when you add to that the heavy metals that deposit in your bones, gut, brain, kidneys, and tissues, it doesn’t sound healthy. This includes mercury from dental fillings and fish, aluminium from cookware, cosmetics and antiperspirants, cadmium from cigarette smoke, arsenic from foods and fluoridated water, and lead from paint, toys, fuel, and more. Once deposited, these toxic metals can block the functions of vital nutrients like zinc, calcium, and magnesium. Glyphosate and heavy metals don’t go away on their own… They tend to stay put until you take action to help your body remove them. But there is a special form of Folate – a crucial B vitamin – that’s now being recognised and used to help cleanse away these problematic substances. However, many people are getting the wrong form of this misunderstood nutrient that’s so essential for helping to remove toxins, healthy cell growth and division. And by consuming this wrong form, you may actually be harming your body.
Before we get into the details about why the right form of this vitamin matters so much, let’s take a closer look at why you may need it in the first place. Is your natural production of Folate under siege? If so, blame it on Glyphosate’s stealth gut-attacking action. Here’s what’s so bad about glyphosate…Glyphosate slips itself into every cell of the plant, not just the surface where it’s applied. And it remains there. No matter how hard you try, you can’t wash it or peel it away. Grains, beans and legumes tend to have the highest levels of glyphosate contamination. Farmers spray the herbicide on the plants shortly before harvest to improve yield. Glyphosate targets your important gut microbes that produce Folate. It’s also sprayed on fruits to make them last longer. And because it’s now in the water and the rain, it’s even being found in some USDA-Certified Organic crops. The World Health Organization (WHO) declared glyphosate a “probable carcinogen” in March of 2015, and the state of California finally listed glyphosate as a carcinogen (A substance capable of causing cancer in living tissue) in July of 2017. Some experts believe the harmful effects of glyphosate may be even worse than the pesticide DDT that was first used during World War II until it was finally banned in 1972. So how can its manufacturer continue to make the claim that glyphosate isn’t harmful? They claim that the mechanism by which it kills weeds, called the shikimate pathway, doesn’t exist in humans and animals. Also known as shikimic acid pathway, this is a seven-step metabolic pathway used by bacteria, archaea, fungi, algae, some protozoans, and plants for the biosynthesis of folates and aromatic amino acids (tryptophan, phenylalanine, and tyrosine). However, this pathway is present in bacteria. And every cell in your body has its own microbes and all of them have the shikimate pathway and respond to glyphosate. Glyphosate actually targets the microbes that produce folate which are lactobacillus and bifidobacteria, crippling your body’s natural folate levels and chronic exposure to glyphosate, even in very small amounts, can disrupt the delicate balance of your gut microbes, leading to GI inflammation and an impaired gut barrier. Normally, your gut microbes supply your body with important amounts of folate. But if you have glyphosate in your system, as 3 out of 4 people do, your supply of folate may be at risk thanks to chronic exposure to one of the most potent antimicrobial agents in modern history.
5-MTHF Folate is a Game Changer
Folic Acid Supplementation isn’t the Solution
Obviously you need the correct amount of Folate, Dr Mercola encourages you to think about this… It may take you by surprise, as it is likely to be the opposite of the conventional medical advice. However, you’ll soon see there is very good reason and scientific proof for making this request. In fact, it’s one that could have profound effects on your health. Dr Mercola recommends you to avoid folic acid supplementation. Now, you may be wondering, “Isn’t this nutrient essential for health?” Here’s the thing… your body needs Folate, not folic acid. And no matter what anyone says, folic acid and folate are not interchangeable. Folic acid is not the same thing as the Folate you get from food. What’s more, folic acid combined with the glyphosate and heavy metals pervasive in our food supply may actually prevent you from getting the Folate you need. Folate is vital for your health. Your cells need it for healthy growth and division. Your entire body and your brain need it for proper functioning. And if you are a pregnant woman, your developing foetus especially needs folate. While Dr Mercola suggests avoiding folic acid, you must get enough Folate every single day.
You could be overdosing on Folic Acid… but still be deficient in Folate. Today, even though it is still widely recommended by most conventional physicians, some experts believe Americans may be getting too much folic acid. How can that be? Up to 40% of adults take supplements containing folic acid. And if you eat any processed foods that contain enriched flour, you’re getting additional folic acid, whether you want it or not. A law was passed in the United States in 1998 that required all fortified flour products, including bread, cereal, flour, cornmeal, pasta, rice, and other grain products to contain 0.7 milligrams of folic acid per serving. Why was this made a law, you may be wondering? And why hasn’t the European Union joined America in embracing this practice? Back in the ‘90s, the incidence of spina bifida (A condition that affects the spine and is usually apparent at birth. It is a type of neural tube defect) was increasing. Spina bifida can happen anywhere along the spine if the neural tube does not close all the way. Since this birth defect is related to folate, the U.S. government believed it had a deficiency problem on its hands. They decided that adding the cheaper synthetic form of Folate, folic acid, to foods that many people ate daily seemed like the obvious, cost-effective solution. This is the main reason for manufacturers started adding this synthetic form of Folate to enriched flours. Like always, it’s all about the mighty Dollar! However, remember the effects of glyphosate on your gut microbes that we talked about earlier? Certain genetically engineered foods have a similar effect. Certain genetically engineered foods, like GE corn, have a similar detrimental effect on your gut microbes and can impair the pathway that produces Folate. GE corn and soy had already been on the market for a few years when lawmakers passed this law. So, if you’re harming your gut microbes that naturally produce folate, you could be deficient in Folate?

Signs of a Folate Deficiency
Ancient Purity believes that the following symptoms (under this paragraph) are just the outward signs of a Folate deficiency. Inside, you need to absorb adequate Folate to help keep your cells and organs healthy. Besides the harm glycogen can do to your gut, ageing is also associated with changes in your gastrointestinal tract that can affect your absorption of Folate. And because of that, deficiencies of Folate and Vitamin B12 are more commonly seen in older individuals. Studies show a link between low levels of folate and poor cognitive function and memory concerns. If you consume a lot of folic acid from fortified foods and supplements, you can actually mask the appearance of a vitamin B12 deficiency. Folate deficency can show up as... Low Mood or Irritability / Poor Digestion, Bloating / Confusion, Forgetfulness / Premature Greying of hair / Frequent Illness/ Loss of Appetite / Pale Skin / Sore, Red Tongue and Mouth / Occasional Loose Stools or Constipation /and Weakness or Lack of Energy.
Your Liver could be compromised by too much Folic Acid... At Ancient Purity, we think you’ll agree that it’s clear we need a good daily source of folate. However, is supplementing with folic acid the best way to get it? Imagine this scenario… The average person may be taking a supplement with folic acid and eating folic acid-enriched foods. That can add up to a significant amount of man-made folic acid. What happens to all of it? Folic acid must be converted to folate for your body to use it. But because folic acid is missing what’s known as a methyl group, it must first get one from your liver before it can be converted. So how’s this related to ridding your body of harmful substances? When you consume large amounts of folic acid from supplements and processed foods and due to this your liver can become overwhelmed. Through the process of supplying methyl groups to folic acid, your liver can deplete itself of these critical groups. Your liver not only can lose its ability to reduce folic acid, but this process can also use up its supply of glutathione, the powerhouse molecule that’s essential for your body’s ability to clear-out unwanted substances. Glutathione is needed to bind to and remove mercury and other heavy metals. If the folic acid you consume can’t get the methyl group from your liver, the folic acid accumulates in your blood. So if your liver exhausts itself, you can lose on two counts, compromise your body’s ability to cleanse itself of heavy metals and harmful substances and be left with folic acid hanging out in your blood which is also not a good thing.
Folic Acid’s toxic effects on Brain & Immune function... Folic acid travels to your brain, and there, can block your brain’s folate receptors. It must be in the reduced, active 5-MTHF form to cross your blood-brain barrier for cognitive benefits. If and when you finally do get the right form of folate to your brain, it’s useless because the folic acid is already there blocking it from working properly. This blockage can lead to issues associated with low levels of folate in your brain and central nervous system. While Folate is vital for proper brain function and mental and emotional health, folic acid doesn’t provide the same benefits and may even have toxic effects. A recent study of post-menopausal women taking daily folic acid supplements showed that elevated serum folic acid levels or inactive folic acid in your blood can reduce the critical actions of natural killer cells. Interestingly Ancient Purity found an early study from the 1990s which showed folic acid supplementation did provide benefits without any downside. It was believed that your gut microbes took care of reducing the folic acid to its active form Folate. Then a ground-breaking study in 2014 that proved this belief to be wrong. It turns out there’s an extra step that must happen before your gut can fully reduce and add methyl groups to folic acid. This puts an even greater burden on your liver that can lead to liver stress, impaired removal of toxins, and reduced antioxidant and methylation capacity.
Do you need more Folate?
5-MTHF Folate... Methylation
We just talked about how your liver must methylate or add methyl groups to folic acid before your body can use it. What exactly does this mean? And what is methylation? Methylation is a process where methyl groups (Unique structures of one carbon atom and three hydrogen atoms) are added to the DNA molecules in your cells. This process occurs over a billion times a second to keep your body functioning properly! In fact, this life-supporting process provides these necessary methyl groups to over two hundred functions in your body. Ancient Purity is convinced you’ll agree that methylation is important for your health, and especially your longevity. However, in many individuals, the methylation cycle can’t effectively use the methyl groups it produces.
How can you tell if you may be one of the many whose methylation cycle isn’t working optimally. You might be feeling low in energy. Maybe you’re feeling moody or down. You may not be sleeping as well as you’d like. Or you may be finding it hard to concentrate or notice it takes you a while to calm down after a frightful experience. Perhaps you’re dealing with metabolic, thyroid or heart issues, or have questions about your hormones. All these can be signs that you have a mutation in the gene that controls your methylation cycle known as the MTHFR gene (stands for methylene-tetrahydrofolate reductase). A mutation is a change in your DNA sequence. When you have a MTHFR mutation, you have what’s considered a down-regulation of the enzyme. A mutation can affect a gene’s shape and function. So what does all this have to do with folate? The enzyme MTHFR converts the folate you get in food into its active form, 5-Methyltetrahydrofolate (5-MTHF). You can kick-start your methylation cycle by turning folic acid into methylate folate or 5-MTHF. And methylation is essential for the proper removal of heavy metals and chemicals like glyphosate from your body. Generally speaking, many individuals with MTHFR enzyme challenges aren’t able to purge heavy metals and other toxic substances properly. Although the incidence of a MTHFR mutation varies widely depending on ethnic group and region, some leading alternative practitioners now believe that as many as 40 - 50% (or more) of the U.S. population may have the gene defect! The best way to know for sure if you are affected is to work with a holistic practitioner and possibly test for MTHFR.
Folate can Detox your World
MTHFR Gene Mutation Solutions
The good news is, even if you have a variance in the gene, you are not doomed to expressing it! There are many everyday things you can do to help balance methylation and give your body its best chance to overcome the shortfall:
- Avoid Folic Acid rich foods and supplements / Eat lots of organic whole foods (Find rich Folate foods).
- Avoid processed foods, refined carbohydrates, and sugar / Minimise stress and practice stress management.
- Avoid dairy, gluten, and soy (especially if you have methylation issues) / Restrict (or avoid) alcohol (it depletes needed B vitamins)
- Avoid smoking / Reduce your exposure to plastics, BPA, and manmade materials / Avoid products with toxic and harsh chemicals.
By following these healthy living guidelines, you can help reduce the stress on your elimination organ, your liver, and help improve your methylation and your body’s ability to remove harmful substances. But to truly improve your body’s ability to cleanse itself and methylate properly, you must go beyond the basics… Dr Mercola suggests you should take additional steps.
Clean Living Naturally
Boost Methylation, Detox from Glyphosate, Heavy Metals & Toxic Chemicals
If you are one of the many who has a gene mutation, you need to know about folate. This B vitamin plays a valuable role in proper methylation and the elimination of toxins, unlike folic acid because of how it is metabolised in your body. However, not just any folate... You need Folate in the reduced and methylated 5-MTHF form to kick-start your methylation and clearing of toxins. Here’s what make 5-MTHF so valuable… This form of folate bypasses the faulty folic acid metabolism cycle. Why put unnecessary stress on your liver, especially if there is a chance your DNA methylation cycle may not be working properly?
By supplementing with 5-MTHF, you reduce the chance of overtaxing your liver and depleting it of its methyl groups and supply of glutathione for your body’s cleansing processes. Methylfolate, or the 5-MTHF form of folate, already has its methyl groups, so you get both the methyl and the reduced capacity. You don’t need to place unnecessary stress on your liver! In just a moment I will tell you what to look for because getting the right form of folate can be a real challenge. You’ll be shocked to see how easy it is to be fooled by imposters!
Make Real Folate work for You
The Folate Scam: Insist on real 5-MTHF
Many manufacturers still use the words folic acid and folate interchangeably as if they’re the same thing. You now know the difference so don’t let them fool you. Don’t let them lead you to think you’re getting folate when it’s really only inexpensive synthetic folic acid. So how can you make sure you don’t end up with folic acid? Beware of supplements that list only "folate." You want to see the exact form of folate: L-methylfolate or 5-MTHF. These are the biologically active forms of this B vitamin.
Be especially careful that you don’t confuse the active forms with the biologically inactive forms that include D-methylfolate and 6(R)-methylfolate , it’s easy to do! While you’re checking the fine print on the label, make sure you’re also getting a high enough dose of 5-MTHF-folate to meet your needs. To help with our own, friends and family toxin removal strategy, we searched for a 5-MTHF-folate supplement. We really struggled to find one that supplied high enough levels. We were even told by one supplier that the level we wanted wasn’t available because it was reserved for pharmaceutical use. Obviously this motivated Ancient Purity even more to source a 5-MTHF Folate supplement and here is why.
Folate at Ancient Purity
Backed by Science, Folate 5-MTHF
Animal and human studies on 5-MTHF Folate reveal some important findings: Demonstrates an enhanced oral bioavailability compared to folic acid and other forms of reduced folate. Passes the gastric barrier and is absorbed mainly in the small intestine, ensuring a higher folate uptake. It can effectively improve folate biomarkers in young women in early pregnancy, making it the preferred form for before and during pregnancy. Supplementation lowers blood levels of toxic arsenic. Completely bypasses the "damaged" MTHFR conversion step and delivers "finished" folate the body can immediately use without any kind of metabolism. Put it very simple, our Folate aids your tissues’ ability to dispose of unwanted substances, such as glyphosate, heavy metals, and even the remnants of antibiotic therapy. If you have glyphosate in your system, as 3 in 4 individuals likely do, you want to remove it as quickly as possible. As we discussed earlier, glyphosate can disrupt your natural production of folate, damage your gut microbiome and barrier, and set you up for leaky gut. Because glyphosate is now pervasive in our food supply, the first step you must take is to improve your diet. Curtail your intake of sugars and refined grains and carbs. Eliminate folic acid-containing foods and supplements. Buy organically grown produce and avoid crops treated with glyphosate.
Since methyl folate works so closely with vitamin B12 for methylation and for the production of energy and healthy red blood cells, consider taking Vitamin B12 along with Folate. Many people, especially older Americans, are deficient in this crucial B vitamin. Ancient Purity offer an easy-to-use, Liposomal Vitamin B12 (See our ‘Related Products’ section). Many people find that by simply replacing folic acid with the preferred form of folate, 5-MTHF, cleaning up their diet, and following the healthy living guidelines I reviewed earlier enables them to meet their health goals. However, some individuals want to help take their bodies’ cleansing processes to the next level. An advanced plan… First, remove the cell-damaging substances. Then, rebuild your cells. Ancient Purity recommends the following products to help break down and remove cell-damaging substances like glyphosate and heavy metals... Folate, Liposomal Vitamin B12 and Spirulina & Chlorella.
Understanding Folate (Vitamin B9)
Methyl Folate 5-MTHF… Closing Thoughts
L-methylfolate is the biologically active form of vitamin B9. That means it is the form the human body can actually use in circulation. The other forms of vitamin B9 you should know are folic acid and folate. These are the forms we eat, although L-methylfolate is also found naturally in some high-folate food too. Folate is often called the natural form of vitamin B9, but it actually refers to a family of different compound that occur naturally in some vegetables. Folic acid is the supplemental or “synthetic” form of vitamin B9 and is typically the first line of treatment for folate deficiency and related health conditions, such as high homocysteine and Neural Tube Defects. In fact, it has been so beneficial for the general population that the addition (fortification) of folic acid to wheat flour is now mandatory in Australia, USA, Canada and several other countries.
But note that folic acid is also found naturally in foods, as it is just another compound of folate. Any folic acid we ingest must be metabolised (converted) into Dihydrofolate (DHF), Tetrahydrofolate (THF), and then finally into L-methylfolate (5-MTHF) to be used in the body. Once in this form it can be transported into cells, tissues and even across the blood-brain barrier. Supplementing with L-methylfolate bypasses the entire folic acid metabolism cycle, which is good news if you have an MTHFR mutation. Think of it like receiving a cooked meal instead of all the raw ingredients. An MTHFR mutation is equal to not having the pots and pans to cook with. Studies show that L-Methyfolate supplementation is equally (if not more) effective than folic acid for increasing circulating folate in those with an MTHFR mutation. It is also highly effective at reducing homocysteine levels in healthy people (6, 7). It is also better absorbed and interacts with fewer medications than folic acid (8). Active folic acid is highly protective against Neural Tube Defects. This is why all national and international health organisations advocate for folic acid supplementation before and during early pregnancy. For those who do not metabolise folic acid well, supplementing L-Methylfolate is the clear alternative while pregnant. Especially if you have a homozygous C677T or A1298C mutation, which is thought to increase your folate requirements even more. As always, we at Ancient Purity encourage our customers and visitors doing more research on certain natural health supplements. Regarding L-methylfolate, this might be a good report to start with: Folate, folic acid and 5-methyltetrahydrofolate are not the same thing
