Lutein Zeaxanthin
Both Zeaxanthin and Lutein are carotenoids, major components of retinal pigments, which enable vision they are contained in some green leafy organic vegetables. Lutein is an important antioxidant which filters blue light, it may help protect the retina from UV damage. Studies have shown Lutein can reduce the risks and effects of ARMD (Age Related Macular Degeneration) . Autopsies have found that levels of these two carotenoids are 30 percent lower in the retinas of individuals who had macular degeneration than in those without this problem. Other research has shown that those with the highest intake of lutein and zeaxanthin have a 57 percent lower risk of developing macular degeneration.

These two nutrients also help to protect against cataracts. In the 12-year, 77,000+ woman Nurses Health Study, women in the top group of lutein-zeaxanthin intake had 22 percent lower risk of cataract surgery. And an eight-year study of 36,000+ male physicians found a 19 percent lower risk of cataract in the highest lutein-zeaxanthin consuming group.

Astaxanthin
Astaxanthin’s structure closely resembles lutein and zeaxanthin. Other ways to look after your Eye Health

Vitamin C
The aqueous humor is the watery fluid that fills the space between the cornea and the iris. The fluid nourishes and protects the cornea and lens and gives the eye its shape. Aqueous humor has very high levels of Vitamin C – much higher than our blood.  Maintaining high levels of Vitamin C in the aqueous is essential to nourish the eyes and protect them from oxidative stress. Cataracts occur when the lens of the eye clouds over. Regular intake of Vitamin C can help maintain the lens transparency and clarity. Glaucoma is known as the ‘sneak thief of sight’ because the loss of vision is so gradual. Glaucoma is characterised by the progressive loss of optic nerve cells. It was once thought increased intraocular pressure caused glaucoma. It’s now known that not everyone with glaucoma has raised intraocular pressure. However, as far back as 1972 Italian scientists found that regular consumption of Vitamin C helped lower the intraocular pressure in glaucoma patients.

Macular degeneration affects our central vision and is the leading cause of blindness. Scientists know that people with a diet rich in Vitamin A foods such as dark green leafy vegetables are less likely to develop age-related macular degeneration. It is now thought that a lack of Vitamin C may increases our risk of developing age-related macular degeneration too. In the most recent study cited above US scientists at Oregon Health and Science University found that nerve cells in the retina need to be ‘bathed’ in high doses of Vitamin C to function. This may be particularly important in treating many eye – and brain – diseases as retinal nerves are part of the central nervous system. Nobel prize winner Linus Pauling recommended 6 to 8 grams of vitamin C a day.

Taurine
Found in high concentrations in retinal light-receptor cells. While taurine hasn’t been formally studied in human macular degeneration or cataract, taurine-deficient monkeys have actual structural changes in retinal light receptors and loss of visual acuity. Taurine-deficient cats also have degeneration of light-receptor cells. There’s a bit of evidence to suggest that taurine might help prevent cataract, too. Taurine is concentrated in animal proteins, especially organ meats, fish, and other animal protein but is virtually absent from vegetables.

Consume Foods Containing Lutein

  • Broccoli
  • Peas
  • Spinach
  • Corgettes
  • Balance your Omega-3 levels (essential regardless of vision) Krill oil or a high quality Fish oil or perhaps better still Udo's blend of seed based essential oils..
  • Consume egg yolks raw egg yolks contain zeaxanthin and lutein (superfood for the eyes)

As with overall health make sure you are eating a diet with lots of vegetables and fruits and as usual eat a high percentage of these raw. Carrots being top of the list.

Eye Exercise

Exercises to condition, strengthen and tone the 6 eye muscles to keep them efficient and healthy is unfortunately not the solution. These may cause a temporary improvement but over time could cause huge deterioration. The biggest problem is that your eye muscles are subject to strain, tightness, and contraction. No amount of eye exercises will correct this, more dangerously they can degrade your vision further. The Solution?........ Relax

You must teach or we should say re-teach your eyes to relax. Children tend to have healthy unstrained vision, never struggling to see, rather letting it happen effortlessly. Too simple? relaxing your eyes and re-learning how to see like a young child could make all the difference to your vision. If we take two children in nursery school, both of them with equally good eyesight, one of them will great eyesight right until the end of their life, while the other child's eyesight will worsen over time simply because that child does'nt learn to see and look at things without effort. The child that simply looks naturally without thought will always fair better visually. Starting to sound too Zen?

A good eye will never attempt to bring out a point by staring at it, as the weaker visioned eye is always doing.

If you ever try to see, your eye instantly fails to have normal vision. Looking at multiple small objects like pebbles on the beach with normal vision is fine, but if you start to try to count them you may well become myopic, the "trying" to see once again comes into play and again the eye is hindered. The eyeball's shape will always be strained when altered attempting distant vision. Equally it hinders the eye and strains it when you fail to see things at close up.

When your eye possesses central fixation the sight is perfect, more importantly it is relaxed will work indefinitely with no strain or fatigue. There are no muscular insufficiencies. So no only are the facial muscles at rest but the muscles of your whole body are relaxed, thus when this state becomes habitual there are dark circles around your eyes or heavy wrinkles.

With seeing follow the wisdom of yoda "Do or not do , there is no try." Never try to see, let your eyes work naturally and relax.

Relaxtion:

Relaxing the eyes will improve blood flow and re-learning to see without trying will be the biggest aid in improving your vision but as always what you feed your body with and your lifestyle have a huge part to play.  Disharmony in the mind can produce many different kinds of eyestrain. Lets forget about all these strains and concentrate on the solution.... relaxation. Healthy vision relies on  good blood and circulation, these are heavily influenced by  thoughts. If your thoughts are harmonious i.e not over stimulated by high excitement or strain , the circulation of your brain is normal, the blood supply for your optic nerve and visual centers are normal, your vision will be harmonise, in other words it will be perfect. Troubled thoughts disturb your  circulation, the supply of blood to your optic nerve and visual centers changes, and your vision is impaired.

Can you accept responsibility? for many of us the universe may try to teach us this lesson over an over until we get it, we're not saying you create your world through your thoughts but most definately your thoughts affect your physiology.

If you consciously think thoughts that disturb your circulation and impair your vision, you can then decide to consciously think thoughts that will restore normal circulation thus improving not only refraction errors, but many unwanted conditions of your eyes. No amount of effort can make yourself see, however if you learn to control your thoughts you can accomplish that end indirectly.

When disturbing thoughts are replaced by harmonious ones, your squint disappears, the double vision and the errors of refraction corrected. No matter how long your eyes have been impaired there can be improvement. The cause of any error of refraction, squint, or any other functional disturbance of your eye is simply a thought, a wrong thought, the improvement is as fast as the thought that relaxes.

What to Avoid:

You don't need to be told this anymore, your here because you know/care about your health and the health of those around you.
Therefore you will already know that avoiding poor quality processed foods, and much of the other junk passed as food will help you on your way. Although its worth drilling it in again AVOID trans fats, read labels check what restaurants chains etc. No exceptions
