Selenium is an essential trace mineral which is found in fish, Brazil nuts and fruits grown in tropical soils. It is essential to the body's antioxidant systems and in the formation of thyroid hormones. It also plays a role in the immune system and in reproduction. Selenium has been documented by the European Food Standards Agency as being the safest and most bio-effective form of Selenium. Food State Selenium is far better absorbed and used (by the body) than inorganic selenium.

This Food State Selenium supplement is presented to the body complete with all the amino acids and other phyto-nutrients with which this mineral is found in food Food State Selenium is effectively a natural, organic form of the mineral and it is hence far better absorbed and used than inorganic selenium. Recent data also shows yeast-bound selenium to be far more bioavailable and totally non-toxic in therapeutic doses Selenium is a natural antioxidant that protects against free radicals and appears to preserve elasticity of tissue, which becomes less elastic with ageing Selenium is a key nutrient in helping support the functions of the immune system and maintains certain energy-producing cells, including those of the heart, by ensuring an adequate oxygen supply.

Selenium may help individuals with low thyroid function, including those taking thyroxine medication. The multifaceted benefits of selenium even extend to the brain. Selenium plays a part in the manufacture of brain chemicals known as neurotransmitters, and low levels of selenium in the elderly are linked with an increased risk of dementia and senility. So, where is this most versatile of nutrients to be found? The best food sources are kidneys and Brazil nuts. Other reasonable sources include shellfish, fish, liver, red meat, poultry and wheat. However, anyone wanting to ensure an adequate intake of selenium would do well to consider supplementation. Selenium supplements, often combined with other antioxidants such as  vitamins A, C and E, are widely available in health food stores.

  • Normal function of the immune system.
  • Thyroid function Protection of DNA, protein and lipids from oxidative damage.
  • Contributes to the protection of cell constituents from oxidative damage.
  • Selenium contributes to normal spermatogenesis.

Selenium is necessary for the production of ‘prostaglandins’ and as such plays an important role in maintaining thyroid functions and male fertility/ reproductive functions This is a Food State supplement - uniquely provides nutrients in the same form as those in food .

Although for healthy people with a nutrient rich organic diet, Selenium deficiencies are fairly uncommon. But some health conditions - such as HIV, Crohn's disease, and others - are associated with low selenium levels. People who are fed intravenously are also at risk for low selenium. Doctors sometimes suggest that people with these conditions use Selenium supplements. Selenium has also been studied for the treatment of dozens of conditions. They range from  asthma to  arthritis to  dandruff to  infertility. However, the results have been inconclusive.

Selenium & your thyroid
If your level of selenium is low, your thyroid will have do its best to work harder to make it’s hormones, and your body will also have a more difficult job changing those hormones into a form your cells can use. This happens because selenium is a chief component of the molecules which are necessary for your body to be able to create and use thyroid hormones, called seleno-proteins.

What do these molecules do?

  • They directly regulate thyroid hormone production
  • They support the conversion of thyroxine (T4) to triiodothyronine (T3).
  • They protect the thyroid tissues whenever it is affected by stress – this happens almost constantly!

Deficiency of selenium symptoms

  • Muscle pain or weakness
  • Discoloration of hair or skin
  • Whitening of the beds of your fingernails

In addition to assisting with production thyroid hormones, selenium is also critical in the regulation of thyroid hormonal levels. Several of the enzymes arranged around selenium are key factors in assuring that thyroid hormone levels remain balanced. Some of these enzymes, called seleno-de-iodinases help to keep T3 at an appropriate level in liver, kidney, thyroid and brain cells. Glutathione peroxidase is another enzyme which helps to limit T4 when its levels go on the high side. Our overall health can suffer if our body is unable to maintain the right levels of essential thyroid hormones, due to a lack of the selenium needed to create these enzymes.

Selenium & iodine

The problems which selenium deficiency can cause are made more serious when another key nutrient, iodine, is low as well. Iodine is a nutrient that is much better known for its role in thyroid health. Selenium is crucial in aiding the body to recycle iodine. A selenium deficiency coupled with an iodine deficiency is likely to lead to thyroid imbalance. An enlarged thyroid is commonly known as a goiter. This is one of the more serious forms of thyroid imbalance. Many people who are diagnosed with a goiter have a deficiency of iodine, but research has shown that some may have a significant selenium deficiency as well. It’s vital to treat both deficits in order to reestablish thyroid stability.

Taking Selenium
Women who have digestive problems are more likely to develop selenium deficiency, as are those who don’t consume a varied diet which contains selenium-rich foods and this includes many people with a modern diet.  The amount of selenium you get from your diet can tend to be inconsistent, especially if you have digestive problems, and so many people do, mostt not even realising it. If you don’t eat selenium containing foods on a regular basis, or if you have a GI condition which impairs your ability to absorb nutrients, a good alternative is to use our Multi-vitamin & Mineral complex or if you suspect long term defiecency you are better with these tablets, its worth then exploring use with Lugols Iodine.
