The body requires B-12 during DNA synthesis, particularly rapid synthesis, such as during blood cell formation in the bone marrow. In the nervous system, Vitamin B-12 functions in the metabolism of fatty acids involved in the formation of the myelin sheath around nerve cells. Myelin insulates nerve cells and increases the speed of electrical impulses between nerve cells. The breakdown of myelin, due to a lack of Vitamin B12, can be detrimental, leading to a variety of neurological and neuromuscular disorders.
Many experts previously believed that strict vegetarians were the primary group that could develop a Vitamin B12 deficiency. If you had adequate stores of this important nutrient in your body, the experts believed you were “safe” for many years from developing a B12 deficiency. Now we know better. Vitamin B12 deficiency and depletion are much more common than previously thought, especially in the over-60 population. In fact, it's believed that almost one in four people over 60 have deficient levels of this vital vitamin. Equally disturbing are emerging signs that other age groups harbour suboptimal blood levels of B12 as well. Why is Vitamin B12 deficiency such a big deal, Because your body depends on vitamin B12 for a host of functions. So see if it could be a game changer for you.

Vitamin B12 is Vital for your Health
Vitamin B12 provides benefits for your energy levels, skin, hair, memory, mood, heart, digestion and more. It supports your body against adrenal fatigue and supports multiple metabolic functions — including enzyme production, DNA synthesis and hormonal balance, as well as maintaining healthy nervous and cardiovascular systems.
When your blood levels of vitamin B12 are low, one or more of these functions listed above may be disrupted. Without adequate blood levels of B12, you can experience symptoms related to low energy, mental fatigue, mood changes, sleep difficulties, and even occasional indigestion.
Your body relies on the efficient conversion of carbohydrates to glucose – your body's source of fuel – just like your car needs to be able to use gas to run smoothly. Vitamin B12 plays a major role in that conversion in your body. Likewise, B12 enables your body to convert fatty acids into energy as well.

Why People Become Vitamin B12 Deficient?
We are more likely to become Vitamin B12 deficient with age, not getting enough in your diet and from losing the ability to absorb it. In India, which is primarily a vegetarian based culture and current studies there show about 80% of the adults are deficient in Vitamin B12. But vegetarians and vegans are not the only ones who can become Vitamin B12 deficient.
With age your digestive system gradually breaks down, especially if you have a medium to poor quality diet. To be specific as to how... the lining of your stomach gradually loses its ability to produce hydrochloric acid, which releases Vitamin B12 from your food. If you have or do use antacids or anti-ulcer drugs these will also lower your stomach acid secretion and decrease your ability to absorb Vitamin B12. Infection with Helicobactor pylori, a common contributor to stomach ulcers, can also result in Vitamin B12 deficiency.
However, the main cause of Vitamin B12 deficiency is a term researchers call food-cobalamin malabsorption syndrome. Cobalamin is the scientific term for Vitamin B12. This typically results when your stomach lining loses its ability to produce intrinsic factor which is a protein that binds to vitamin B12 and allows your body to absorb it at the end of your small intestine.
Signs of Vitamin B12 Deficiency
- Tiredness & Feelings of Weakness.
- Low Nervous System Functioning.
- Feeling off Balance.
- Poor Liver or Heart Health.
- Premature Grey Hair.
- Occasional Digestive Issues.
- Under-Optimal Eye Health.
- Appetite Loss & Unintended Weight-Loss.
- Constipation & Gas - Even just Occasional.
- Poor Memory.
- A Tendency toward Nervousness.
Feeling Less than your Very Best? Try Liposomal Vitamin B12!
Eating for Vitamin B12 May Not be Enough
You may be surprised to know, but you might need to supplement with Vitamin B12, even if you eat foods rich in Vitamin B12,certainly if you experience and of the symptoms we listed above. So you can eat plenty of meat, poultry, lamb's liver, brewer's yeast, clams, eggs, herring, mackerel, kidneys, milk, dairy products or seafood – and still have low levels of B12.
This could be because your body is unable to absorb it from your gut. You see B12 needs the help of a protein in order to be absorbed. That protein is called intrinsic factor. And because the lining of your stomach makes intrinsic factor, people with less-than-optimal gastrointestinal health often need to supplement with B12. Likewise, most people older than 50 have a limited ability to absorb B12, too. Thus, the need for supplementation.

Liposomal Vitamin B12... Science Working with Natural Health
Liposome is derived from two Greek words: 'Lipos' meaning fat and 'Soma' meaning body
An artificial microscopic vesicle consisting of an aqueous core enclosed in one or more phospholipid layers. In other words, a liposome is a tiny 'nano' sized bubble or sphere (vesicle) made from a phospholipid (in this case, phosphatidylcholine). This is the same material of which our cell membranes consist. These bubbles can be filled with substances such as Vitamin C, Glutathione or even drugs. Liposomes have the ability to carry either water of fat-soluble payloads, which makes them an ideal delivery system.
Phospholipids are amphiphilic, they consist of a hydrophilic (water-loving) head and hydrophobic (water-hating) tail.
When phospholipids are placed in an aqueous solution, the hydrophobic tails face each other avoiding the water and forming a phospholipid bilayer while the hydrophilic heads form hydrogen bonds with the water molecules. The lipid bilayer will form a closed sphere (liposome) to completely exclude water from the hydrophobic tail.
Liposomal Vitamin B12… Closing Thoughts
The nutrient known as Vitamin B12 helps to keep your body’s nerve and blood cells healthy and assists with the production of DNA, the genetic material in all of your cells. Vitamin B12 aids preventing megaloblastic anaemia as well, which is a blood condition making people weak and tired. Since our bodies don’t produce vitamin B12, we have to get it through the consumption of animal-based foods or from a premier quality supplement such as Liposomal Vitamin B12. And we all should get Vitamin B12 on a regular basis, because our bodies don’t store Vitamin B12 for very long. Most persons in the West get enough of this vital nutrient. Those who aren’t sure, you can ask your doctor if you should get a blood test checking your Vitamin B12 level.
When we get older it can become more difficult absorbing this nutrient. It can also occur when people had weight-loss surgery or other operations that removed part of their stomach, or to those drinking heavily. People also can get Vitamin B12 deficiency when they follow a vegan diet. Vegans don’t eat any animal products, such as cheese, eggs, milk, and meat. But there are also many vegetarians not consuming enough dairy products or eggs to meet their vitamin B12 needs. In both of those cases, those people can add fortified foods to their diets or take supplements to meet their demand.
Finally I would like to end with this brilliant quote:
“If we weren't so dirt-conscious, we would obtain adequate vitamin B12 from soil, air, water, and bacteria, but we meticulously wash and peel our vegetables now - and with good reason, as we can't be sure our soil is not contaminated with pesticides and herbicides.” - Sharon Gannon
