Sweetgrass grown in the High Plains of Canada... Infuse your home with the unique fragrance of Sweetgrass with these ready-to-use smudge braids, a unique way of enhancing the ambience in your space. These braids are wild-crafted and gathered by hand in an eco-friendly process, they are put together by hand. With deep roots in Native North American ritual, smudging has long been used for ridding spaces of negative energy with the sweet scent of burning herbs. A perfect way to fill your space with a natural and aromatic fragrance, these sage bundles are bound with organic string and smoulder slowly to create a distinctive vanilla-like Sweetgrass scent. Sweetgrass is also one of the herbs frequently included in medicine bundles and amulets. Sweetgrass is believed to attract positive energies and blessings. It is often used in rituals aimed at promoting good fortune, prosperity, and positive outcomes. The soothing scent of Sweetgrass may have positive effects on emotional well-being by reducing stress and anxiety. Some people use sweetgrass as a way to create a tranquil environment. Plains Native Indian peoples used to chew Sweetgrass during ritual fasts, and it was also used as a medicinal herb in some tribes. Sweetgrass like Chaparral  is said to be one of the eldest of all plants and sometimes referred to as the ‘Hair of Mother Earth.’

Here is a complete guide on how to use a Sweetgrass braid as incense

Prepare Your Space

  • Choose a well-ventilated area to ensure good airflow.
  • Open windows or doors to allow any smoke to disperse.
  • Clear any clutter or items that may be flammable.

Lighting the Sweetgrass

  • Hold one end of the Sweetgrass braid and use a lighter or a match to ignite the other end.
  • Allow the Sweetgrass to catch fire and let it burn for a few seconds until you see a steady flame.

Blow Out the Flame

  • Once the sweetgrass is burning steadily, gently blow on the flame to extinguish it. The goal is to produce smoldering embers that release fragrant smoke.

Smudging or Wafting

  • Hold the smoldering end of the sweetgrass braid over a fireproof bowl or shell to catch any falling ashes.
  • Wave the sweetgrass braid around in a circular or sweeping motion to disperse the fragrant smoke.
  • Direct the smoke over yourself, others, or around the space you want to cleanse or purify.

Intent and Prayer

  • If you are using sweetgrass for a specific purpose, such as smudging for spiritual or cleansing purposes, it is common to set an intention or say a prayer during the process.

NOTE:
Numerous North American Native tribes use Sweetgrass in prayer, smudging or purifying ceremonies and consider it a sacred plant. It is usually braided, dried, and burned. Sweetgrass braids smolder and doesn't produce an open flame when burned. Just as the sweet scent of this natural grass is attractive and pleasing to people, so is it attractive to good spirits. Sweetgrass is often burned at the beginning of a prayer or ceremony to attract positive energies. Never leave burning Sweetgrass unattended and always respect the cultural significance of Sweetgrass and its traditional uses.

Q: Why is it important to braid the Sweetgrass?

A: The traditional wiingashk, or Sweetgrass, braid tells the story of how mind, body, and spirit are connected and mutually dependent. To follow the way of the sweetgrass would mean that we give thanks to nature's abundance and use our gifts to nurture the world, thus nurturing ourselves.

Q: How do you keep Sweetgrass from burning?

A: To burn Sweetgrass, light the end of the braid and carefully wave it to release smoke into the air. You can also mix it with Sage (Available @AncientPurity) or cedar either by creating a smudge stick or by mixing the plant medicines in a bowl or abalone shell. Once the plants are burning, smudge your body and the room you're in.

Q: What are Sweetgrass' benefits?

A: Sweetgrass has proven to be a sacred, potent plant believed by many to dispel negative energy, elicit emotional strength, and engage our minds and senses.

Q: What is the reason for braids being important in indigenous culture?

A: For some, braids are a symbol of strength, wisdom, and are something that reflects their identity. Some of our customers stated the braid has a cultural significance, and they felt a connection to the Creator, their ancestors and the earth.
