Found in and indigenous to the monsoonal parts of Northern Australia, including the Northern Territory’s Kakadu, Queensland’s Cape York and Western Australia’s Kimberley regions. Blue Cypress Essential Oil is steam distilled from the wood and leaves of the mighty rare Northern Cypress Pine. The scientific name is Callitris intratropica, is derived from the Greek calli (beautiful) and treis (three), which references the tree’s triangular leaves that are arranged in spirals of 3. It has been used for thousands of years by Australian aboriginals in a variety of household and personal applications. It's so distinctive and cherrished that the aroma of the tree was selected as the official fragrance of the 2000 Sydney Olympics.

Traditionally used to moisturise dry skin, this oil also has historical use as a component in perfumes and even as an adhesive. The Tiwi people of Melville and Bathurst Island have traditionally used Australian Blue Cypress for probably thousands of years. They crushed the plant material and used it as both a hygienic wash and to keep away the little pests of dusk and dawn. Plant pieces were also placed on hot stones or ashes the vapours inhaled. The resin from the Australian Blue Cypress was called Australian Sandarac resin and was used medicinally for coating ‘gastro-resistant’ capsules, so the capsules did not dissolve in the stomach.

History and Progression of Australian Blue Cypress

Australian Blue Cypress essential oil is extracted via steam distillation of the stem and branches. Australian Blue Cypress is grown in plantations around Darwin. These plantations were actually planted by the Northern Territory government for timber production in the 1960’s.

After Cyclone Tracy in 1974, timber (and hence the plantations) were deemed unsuitable for cyclone proof construction. As a result the blue cypress plantations were left idle and written off, until the ‘discovery’ of its unique essential oil in 1995. Today the plantations are managed sustainably based on a 30 year rotation. The trees are harvested and then steam distilled for around 48 hours. The harvesting of quite big trees requires heavy machinery and a long distillation process, both of which add significantly to the cost.
